My construction project was halted by the NYC Dept. of Environmental Protection after a neighbor complained about asbestos present. The contractor did not realize that asbestos was present and neither did the architect, who at one point certified that asbestos was absent. I as a homeowner did not know that asbestos was present and trusted the contractor or the architect to find out if the substance was present. Is the contractor responsible? He is the one who haphazardly modified the asbestos insulation of the house and did not even realize the asbestos was what it was. The project was ordered to be suspended by the NYC DEP and delayed the remodeling for a couple of weeks and costed me about $10,000 (including filing fees).

I have two layers of deteriorating floor tiles, the top is vinyl and the bottom is most likely asbestos. I don’t want to start breaking up the asbestos tiles and would rather cover over the whole mess with concrete and then lay new vinyl over the top, or just leave the concrete. If I use concrete, how thick does it need to be to withstand heavy traffic and moisture? Is it advisable to leave a thin layer of concrete bare? Does anyone know about tinted epoxy finishes and whether or not they’re appropriate for floors?

I bought an house of the 50s and was not told that its shingles were made from Asbestos.

They are in pretty good shape and last year I pained over them.

I learned that it is very expensive to remove the Asbestos shingles, thousands of Dollars. Some of my neighbors put new siding over thier old asbestos shingles but the asbestos stays underneath.

My question is: how dangerous are these shingles?

I’m helping my friend dig a huge hole under her porch in a small space where they kept logs in for many years. The house is pretty old. I’m guessing at least 50 years old and my friend and i spend 3 hours there when we work. We’re most likely going to work 2 days a week. Is there a chance that their might be asbestos in that space? How can we check, what can we do to get rid of it, and is it safe to live in that underground room we’re planning to build when we finish digging the hole?
